Rejuvenating and Desilting Bandhalli Doddakere Lake

Bandhalli Doddakere lake, situated near Mulbagal in Kolar, is the lifeline for a cluster of five villages that are heavily reliant on agriculture. Stretching across 32 acres with a staggering water storage capacity of over 1 lakh liters, this lake has been the backbone of water supply to more than 85 acres of farmland. The lake, along with a rising groundwater table, enables farmers to cultivate crops twice a year.

Over the years, neglect and pollution have taken a toll on Bandhalli Doddakere lake, leading to substantial silt deposits. Despite the villagers' efforts in creating feeders to channel water to their fields, persistent silt accumulation has disrupted the water flow. In the last few years, due to insufficient rainfall, dwindling groundwater levels due to consumption and extensive weed growth, farm produce has suffered.

In early 2023, Carrier Abound, a part of Carrier Global Corporation, joined forces with Biome Environmental Trust to revive, desilt and de-weed the lake. This comprehensive effort includes the reconstruction of feeders, aiming not only to restore the lake's health but also to enhance its capacity. These have numerous benefits: a rejuvenated groundwater level, improved soil fertility and the opportunity for villagers to resume cultivating crops twice a year. This collaborative endeavor helps to sustain the livelihoods of the villages in the region. The teams, dedicated to environmental sustainability, visited the villages in November to assess the progress on the ongoing activity.

Within the proximity of the Bandhalli lake lies Pichguntalahalli village. During a visit, the Carrier and Biome teams discovered two neglected open wells, which were damaged over time due to inadequate maintenance. Though these wells had the potential to be a vital source of drinking water, they had unfortunately become unusable. Recognizing this potential, the teams engaged with the locals, who agreed to participate in the maintenance efforts. The wells were successfully rejuvenated, and subsequent water testing revealed an excellent reading of 109 ppm (between 50-150 ppm is considered excellent for drinking), confirming the water from the well is suitable for consumption.

Through these combined efforts, the Carrier and Biome teams are not only addressing immediate challenges but also contributing to the long-term economic and physical well-being of the communities in this region.
